When the royals make us laugh (2024)

Last month,Queen Maxima of the Netherlands appeared to be a little irritated during the Olympics.

She was looking over as her 19-year-old daughter, Princess Alexia, was blowing bubble gum while watching the 100m breaststroke final - and was snapped the second after it popped.

But this is not the only time a younger royal has been spotted doing something that their parents or older relatives might frown upon.

Prince Louis, six, is one standout performer when he comes to mischief - as his antics alongside his late great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth in 2022 proved.

And althoughPrincess Charlotte often keeps her two brothers in check, even she was caught sticking her tongue out when she was Louis's age.

Read below to see all the times the Royals have made us giggle.

Just last month, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands appeared to be a little irritated during the Olympics.

She appeared to give her daughter, Princess Alexia, 19, an angry look as the young royal blew bubblegum while watching the 100m breaststroke final.

She was photographed immediately after the wodge of gum popped.

What's that smell?

At Trooping the Colour last summer, Prince George, Louis and Princess Charlotte all sat in the same carriage.

But at one point, a strong smell - perhaps of horse manure - appeared to get too much for Louis.

He was pictured holding his nose as his older siblings kept composed.

Two royal brothers

Also last year, Prince George and Prince Louis both had animated expressions on the balcony during Trooping the Colour.

But it was Prince Louis's that really drew laughs.

During the flypast, he was spotted screwing up his face and holding his fists out in front of him.

It is a photo that he will likely be reminded of when he is older.

Prince Louis steals the show on the Palace balcony

During what would be one of the Queen's final public appearances, at Trooping the Colour in 2022, Prince Louis was typically mischievous.

The Royal Family had just enjoyed the parade and had gathered on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the flypast.

But the noise from the RAF aircraft prompted young Louis - then aged just four - to cover his hears and scream - as the Queen smiled wryly next to him.

It was a moment that captured the heart of the nation and did the rounds on social media for days afterwards.

Though the hilarious moment seemed to go unnoticed by the other royals who continued to chat amongst one another.

The Queen was affectionately known as ‘Gan Gan’ by the Cambridge children - after Prince George created the adorable nickname for his great-grandmother aged two.

Cheeky Charlotte sticks her tongue out

In 2019, when she was just four, Princess Charlotte stuck her tongue out while watching a prize giving ceremony at the King' Cup Regatta in Cowes.

The cheeky look prompted her mother Kate to laugh, and others joined in too.

It wasn't the only laugh of the day though. Kate was awarded a wooden spoon for coming last at the event.

Prince William

After presenting newborn Prince Louis to the world from outside of the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington in April 2018, Prince William accompanied his wife and son into the car.

He then turned to the crowds standing in front of him and jokingly said while holding up three fingers: 'Thrice worry now!'

However, the gesture looked rather ruder side-on.

The angle meant it looked as though the father of three was holding up his middle finger to the heaps of people waiting to see the family.

Oh my gosh!

Prince George, aged five at the time, attended Princess Eugenie's andJack Brooksbank's wedding in 2018.

An adorable moment between the young royal and his cousin Savannah Phillips was caught on camera during the big day.

While the children were chatting, George seems to be rather surprised and opened his mouth in shock.

He then covered his mouth with his hand.

Mia Tindall

At just 12 months old, Mia Tindall was attending horsing events with her family - including the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park in 2015.

But at one point, the toddler was snapped appearing to reach for a an electrical cable that was plugged into an outdoor socket.

Thankfully, she did not hurt herself.

Like father, like daughter

More than 30 years before Charlotte's cheeky expression, her father Prince William pulled a similar face at the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

The four-year-old royal, who was a page boy at the ceremony in Westminster Abbey, was dressed in a sailor outfit and smart leather shoes.

He stuck his tongue out while sat next to flower girl Laura Fellowes, the daughter of his aunt Jane.

A mischievous Prince Harry

Like his brother William, Prince Harry also wasn't afraid to stick his tongue out when he was younger.

When riding in the back of a car with Princess Diana to nursery 1987, the young royal pulled the mischievous face at photographers.

Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson caught poking fun

Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson had a complex relationship over the years but formed a close bond over their struggles in the Royal Family.

At Royal Ascot in 1986, the pair were spotted using their umbrellas to apparently poke someone in front of them.

Both were wearing their best dresses and mischievous smiles as they cheekily teamed up.
