Cool and creamy….

My favorite frozen summer treat is called a gelati.

It’s fresh Italian water ice layered with frozen custard and the combination is like standing on the beach with a breeze coming in over the waves.

My favorite flavors are either peach water ice and vanilla custard or root beer water ice and vanilla custard.

If you don’t live around the Philly area you probably can’t get a gelatin – I’ve never seen them anywhere else…

But I’m sure even if you can’t get a gelatin that you have your own favorite summer treat that you really enjoy.

And while you’re enjoying your summer fun, don’t forget your dog. Whether you are making them a frozen kong treat or creamy ice cream – it’s a great way to help your dog cool down!

While dogs can take a lick of most human frozen treats, they have WAY too much sugar for dogs to eat more than just a tiny amount.

But luckily for us there are a ton of easy to make homemade frozen dog treat recipes that are fun and let your dog in on the summertime enjoyment.

Dog Ice Cream Recipe – Peanut Butter

I love that this recipe used Dixie type paper cups. It makes it super easy to serve your dog these treats. You can also use paper cups instead of an ice cube tray or mold for any of the recipes on this page.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups plain, nonfat yogurt
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 package apples and chicken baby food
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • small paper treat cups wide enough to accommodate your pup’s muzzle (available at party supply or craft store)
  • wax paper

Instructions:

1: Place 1 cup peanut butter in a microwavable container and heat for 20 seconds to slightly melt the peanut butter which will make it easier to blend. Add all ingredients to a large bowl and stir to thoroughly blend (Image 1). Spoon or pour mixture into treat cups, till about 2/3 full (Image 2).Note:the mixture will expand a bit as it freezes.

2: Tap cups on counter to settle ingredients, then place them on a flat surface in the freezer. Allow to freeze for a minimum of 3-4 hours.

3: Remove from freezer and cover the now-solid cups of ice cream with wax paper so the cups can be stacked to take up less freezer space.Optional:If you like, you can even make cute lids with coordinating card stock. Using an empty treat cup as a stencil, trace around the top and sketch a pull tab onto one side. Cut out the shape with scissors, being sure to cut about 1/2″ inside your pencil line so the lid will slide down into the treat cup.

4: Return ice cream cups to freezer, they’ll keep indefinitely making it easy to treat your pup to a lip-smackin’ frozen treat anytime.

Liver Ice Cream for Dogs

I wouldn’t personally think of eating liver ice cream (ewww), but almost all dogs love liver and this makes a treat that is nutrient dense and healthy. Give it a shot. You’ll be surprised how much your pup will love this.

  • 1/4 pound raw calves liver
  • 1 mashed, rip banana
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Chicken Ice Cream for Dogs

This is more of a frozen treat than an ice cream, especially since it’s 100% dairy free. But dogs – being meat eaters – LOVE this one.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cooked chicken, diced small and frozen
  • 1 cup low-fat, low-sodium, onion free chicken stock
  • Optional: Veggie puree as a doggy sundae topping

Instructions:

Place frozen, diced chicken in a blender, food processor or (our fav) the Magic Bullet*. Slowly add as much stock as needed to make a thick, smooth paste.

Option 1: Place chicken paste in ice cream machine and turn on. Allow chicken “ice cream” to churn, until it firms up, approx. 10 – 15 min. Make sure you frequently scrape down the edges of the bowl to ensure it doesn’t freeze hard to the edge.

Option 2: Place ice cream in a container and place in freezer. Allow to set for half hour, then remove from freezer and blend. Return mix to freezer. Repeat every half hour until ice cream is firm enough to scoop.

Scoop into a dish. We like it fancy, so the dogs have their own ice cream cups, but hey, use whatever bowl floats your boat.

If you want to be all sorts of fancy, serve with veggie puree and crushed liver treats to make a doggy sundae.

Can Humans Eat Dog Ice Cream?

This is a weird question, but I get it often enough to make it something that I probably should answer.

All the recipes here except for the liver one are safe for human consumption, but most humans like their frozen treats a bit sweeter.

So you can try the recipes and see if you like them and if you do go ahead and eat them with your dog. I do think the first three ingredient recipe looks worth trying.
